Edwin “Ed” Rowland James, 68, of Kurtistown, died Sept. 17 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Berkeley, Calif., he was a U.S. Navy veteran who served in Vietnam; a technical director, lighting designer, production manager and co-owner of MDI Productions; and a member of International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Directors Guild of America and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Katsuyoshi Sakae, 88, of Kurtistown, died Sept. 10 at Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Olaa, he was a retired heavy equipment operator for the former Puna Sugar Company, former employee for Calavo Growers Inc. in Keaau and was a member of Puna Hongwanji Mission, Kurtistown Jodo Mission, Kurtistown Young Men’s Association, and Kurtistown Kumiai. Lorraine King, 92, of Kailua, Oahu, died Oct. 4 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in San Francisco, she was a U.S. Marine Corps. veteran who served in World War II, member of the first class of women Marines in March 1943, a retired hospital admissions official and switchboard operator, accomplished vocalist, and parishioner of Sacred Hearts Church, Pahoa.
